As the company grows and evolves, we benefit greatly from the perspective and advice of seasoned executives who have successfully scaled multinational businesses. It’s why I’m excited to share that Tom Horton has joined the Board of Directors as our Lead Independent Director. Tom also currently serves as the Lead Independent Director of Walmart, the world’s largest company by revenue and employees, and in the same role on the board of General Electric.
2021 was a year of immense growth for Blockchain.com. We reached 37M verified users for our consumer business, and saw upwards of $10B worth of institutional trading and loan origination. We acquired four companies, moved our U.S. headquarters to Miami, doubled our team, and began an ambitious expansion effort into Latin America.
Tom’s specialty happens to be running and scaling complex multinational companies. He began his career at American Airlines, rising to become the Chief Financial Officer in 2000. In 2002, he became the CFO at AT&T, leading a strategic merger that created AT&T as we currently know it. In 2006, he returned to American as the CFO, where he was promoted to Chairman and CEO to restructure and grow the company — ultimately presiding over the merger with US Airways, creating American Airlines Group and becoming the world’s largest airline. And in addition to his current board roles, he previously served as Lead Independent Director for Qualcomm.
Our friendship began through a mutual love of hunting and fishing — we’re both outdoorsmen — but quickly evolved as we discovered that we look at the world in much the same way. From airlines to telecom companies, Tom has sought to connect the world and empower people to engage in commerce and communication no matter where they come from. His eyes lit up as we discussed the possibility of creating a financial system for the internet that allows anyone, anywhere to control their money.
As Blockchain.com continues to scale and grow, Tom’s perspective and advice will serve as an incredible asset to the company. Not to mention the fact that he has a lot of experience serving on company boards.
I’m excited to work with an experienced global operator like Tom, to scale our business worldwide. Please join me in welcoming him.
